Pronucleate oocytes: Day 1 post-conventional IVF
Pronucleate oocytes are an early indicator of successful fertilization and play a vital role in the early stages of embryonic development after conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF).
Of the 10 oocytes analysed, 5 exhibited clear pronuclei, indicating successful fertilization. These fertilized pronucleate oocytes displayed characteristic features, including well-defined pronuclei, distinct nucleoli, and condensed chromatin. The 5 remaining oocytes showed evidence of failed fertilization. The unfertilized oocytes could be an indication of poor oocyte quality caused by ineffective sperm penetration. Embryo viability depends upon pronuclear morphology for better implantation and successful pregnancy rates. By evaluating pronuclear morphology, embryologists can predict embryos with higher implantation potential with better clinical outcomes, which refine selection protocols (Fig. 1).
